James Gunn He did not want to replicate what has already been done or completely reinvent. His goal was more ambitious: return the soul to Supermana character that – according to him – became invisible among cynical antiheroes and gloomy narratives.
«Superman is the first superhero, the original, the ideal. But in recent years we stop seeing it like that. This film is our attempt to recover that,» says Gunn.
Before Global film premiere this July 10the director revealed his creative approach, his visual and emotional references, and why he chose actor David Korenswet as the new Clark Kent, said Warner Bros A .com.
Unlike the bleak tone that superhero cinema has dominated in recent years, Superman is a story about being good – literally – in a complicated world.
«It is not about cynicism, constant doubts, or being broken. Superman is a kind being who makes mistakes, who doubts, that bleeds. But never renounces the right thing. And that, today, is revolutionary,» says Gunn.
The screenwriter was inspired by the graphic novel All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
“That was the moment I fell in love with the character as an adult. He showed me that it is not necessary to make superman darker to make it interesting. You just need to show your humanity, ”he says.
Gunn confesses that he found his ideal superman from the first day of auditions: David Korenswet.
«It was perfect. He has the look, yes, but above all it has the essence. He is a straight, kind guy, almost another era. Listening jazz, he is respectful, genuinely noble,» he says.
While Hault, known for his warmth out of cameras, becomes a cold, bright and dangerously human lutor. «Lex believes that Superman represents a real threat. And if he did not do some questionable things, we could even understand his point,» jokes Gunn.
Krypto, Metahumanos and Daily Planet
But Superman is not just about Clark Kent. Gunn introduces a gallery of characters that expand the DC universe: from the adorable and chaotic superperro Krypto (inspired by the director’s own dog), to figures such as Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner. All are part of a new stage of the study that aims to connect films and series with a coherent, fresh and emotionally rich narrative.
The iconic also returns Daily Planetrecreated as a retro writing room in Georgia.
«I wanted to build the heart of journalism in metropolis as a vibrant place, full of life, where these characters cross and discuss. It is almost as important as the strength of loneliness,» he explains.
The film was filmed in real locations: from the Norwegian frost for the strength of loneliness, to Clevelandhometown of the character’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
One of the More complex technical challenges was to film Superman’s flight. Gunn, obsessed with visual realism, worked with specialists so that each air displacement had weight, wind and vertigo.
«I didn’t want me to fly like a puppet. He wanted him to feel visceral, as if a real camera were following him.»
A big start
Superman It marks the official start of the new film universe of DC Studios under the creative direction of Gunn and Peter Safran. The filmmaker, known for his irreverent tone and sharp humor, says that this film is different.
«It’s not Guardians, it’s not The Suicide Squad. It’s something more intimate, more emotional. It’s Superman, and that changes everything.»
